Origins and History

The origins of the Teacup Yorkshire Terrier trace back to the refinement of the traditional Yorkshire Terrier during the late 20th century, when breeders began selectively breeding smaller Yorkies to create an exceptionally petite companion dog. Unlike designer crossbreeds, the Teacup Yorkie is a downsized variation of a purebred Yorkshire Terrier, carefully bred to preserve the breed’s signature elegance, confidence, and luxurious coat.

The Yorkshire Terrier itself originated in 19th-century England, particularly in Yorkshire and Lancashire, where it was bred as a skilled rat hunter in textile mills and mines.
